What Is a QR Code?
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information — usually a URL, text, phone number, or WiFi credentials. Anyone with a smartphone camera can scan it instantly.
QR codes have exploded in popularity since 2020. You see them on restaurant menus, business cards, product packaging, event tickets, payment terminals, and marketing materials.

QR Code Content Types
URLs (Most Common)
Point to any webpage — your website, a product page, a signup form, a social media profile.
Pro tip: Use our URL Shortener first to create a clean short link, then generate a QR code for it. This way you can track clicks and update the destination later.
WiFi Network
Generate a QR code that lets guests join your WiFi without typing the password:
- Network name (SSID)
- Password
- Encryption type (WPA/WPA2)
Scan → connected. Perfect for offices, cafes, Airbnbs, and events.
vCard (Contact Info)
Share your contact details instantly:
- Name, phone, email, company
- Address, website, title
- Scan → saved to contacts
Plain Text
Store any text up to 4,296 characters. Use cases: serial numbers, instructions, configuration data.
Pre-fill an email with recipient, subject line, and body text. One scan → email composer opens.
Phone Number
Scan → phone dialer opens with the number ready to call.
QR Code Best Practices
Size and Placement
- Minimum print size: 2 x 2 cm (0.8 x 0.8 inches) for close-range scanning
- Billboard/poster: At least 10 x 10 cm — the rule is 10:1 (scan distance to code size)
- Always test before printing: Scan the code with multiple devices to make sure it works
Error Correction
QR codes have built-in error correction — they can be partially damaged and still work:
| Level | Recovery | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| L (Low) | ~7% | Digital use (screens) |
| M (Medium) | ~15% | General purpose |
| Q (Quartile) | ~25% | Printed materials |
| H (High) | ~30% | Outdoor/rough conditions, or if adding a logo overlay |
Tip: Use High error correction if you plan to overlay a logo on the center of the QR code.
Colors and Contrast
- The foreground (dark modules) must have sufficient contrast with the background
- Classic black on white has the best scan reliability
- You can use brand colors — just ensure a minimum 4:1 contrast ratio
- Never invert (light modules on dark background) — most scanners struggle with this
